If you sit through the movie credits, you'll see that some films have more producers than actors listed. In the movie and television industries, the credit you get on a project is the item that goes on your resume. If you work on films, music videos or commercials, understanding the difference between the different producer roles is essential. The executive producer is the top dog, with a list of various producers who have different roles under him.

Executive Producer: The CEO

Power

The executive producer is like the CEO of the project. She hires the key leaders and talent – including directors, stars and producers – and supervises them. The executive producer often finances the project, either funding it herself or finding investors to raise the capital needed for production. A company can serve in the executive producer capacity and have one of its employees working as the executive producer. An executive producer may manage several projects at once and not go to the set at all, delegating tasks to those below her.

Producer: The Supervisor

The producer is the on-set supervisor of everything happening on the film or show. Every department head reports to the producer. He also collaborates with the director to ensure everything needed to realize the vision of the project is available and meets the budget. The producer maintains the budget financed by the executive producer and supervises, coordinates and schedules all main components of the project – from development through the distribution release.

Associate Producer: Line Manager

The associate producer is the second in charge after the producer, and takes tasks delegated by the producer. She isn't an assistant; most producers and associate producers on large projects will have their own assistants. But on large film productions, an associate producer might take a small crew to capture 'B-roll' footage used in the film that doesn't need the director or the main actors. She might also be in charge of coordinating things with the lighting and special effects departments.

Co-Producer: Equal Power

If a production has two producers of equal power, they share responsibilities – each is a co-producer of the project. Often a writer will also get a co-producer credit if he has attached any talent, including stars and directors, to the project.

Other Producers: Task Managers

There are other producers on large projects, and they're responsible for specific components. A segment producer works on one segment of a project, perhaps the European filming segment or a television segment. The coordinating producer coordinates project leadership to ensure everyone is on the same page at the same time. A line producer is the hands-on producer on the set working with talent to make decisions on the direction of the film.
