I just returned from a lovely day at the Willow Creek Spa. I checked in at the Spa front desk, and asked to pay the bill for both my facial and my sister's (it was her birthday). The cost was substantial and included an 18% gratuity, which was fine. The facials were very well done, using nice products and quite experienced therapists. My sister's therapist mentioned the 'Good Neighbor' policy that extends discounts of some kind to guests who live nearby (I do). I went back to the check - in desk to ask about this, and was given a fairly vague and rather rude response and told to 'fill out a card for next time'.
Conversely, we went to the Big 3 restaurant for lunch, and our server asked us immediately if we were locals, and automatically gave us a 20% discount. Needless to say, the cost of the entire lunch was still less than what the 'neighbor' rate discount on the treatments would have been. I was just disappointed by the way it was handled by the Spa. It seemed like they were trying to avoid the whole thing. If so, take it off of your website!More

The Fairmont Hotel in San Jose opened its holiday season with a big celebration Friday night that included a surprise appearance by a special guest dressed all in red. No, it wasn't Santa Claus. It was Kelley Cosgrove, who last week became the newest general manager of the luxury hotel.
Cosgrove arrives from the Fairmont's Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa, where she held the same title. In addition to Cosgrove, the Fairmont welcomed another newcomer from the Sonoma Mission Inn: Zeus, a chocolate Labrador who served as the Sonoma hotel's 'canine ambassador' and will serve the same function at the pet-friendly downtown hotel. Zeus stayed close to Cosgrove through most of Friday night's activities but wandered a little around the Lobby Lounge.
Cosgrove is originally from Canada, so she continues the Fairmont's tradition of 'international' managers, following Cyril Isnard (France) and Carlo Nardi (Italy).
‘TARZAN' SOARS: Children's Musical Theatre San Jose has a high-flying hit on its hands with Disney's 'Tarzan,' one of its Marquee Productions presentations supporting the theater's programs.

The theater partnered with Flying by FOY to produce the flying effects, which include five performers swinging above the stage at one point. Ryan Castellino — who plays Terk, one of the apes — even does a bit of singing while hanging upside down.

UPDATES: Good news for the Silicon Valley Independent Living Center. The nonprofit group, which provides services for people with disabilities, made its goal of raising $25,000 by Dec. 1 and will receive a matching donation from the Leo M. Shortino Foundation to help keep its Youth United Leadership Program going.
